HOW TO INTRODUCE A NEW UNIT SYSTEM INTO AN APP
UK users measure their weight in Stone. The current implementation only allow to introduce the weight in kg (metric) and pounds (imperial)
RESEARCH
To discover more about this problem, different research methods were used:
competitors analysis and guerrilla approach.
COMPETITORS
Other apps allow the user to introduce their weight in stone but if you download an american app doesn't allow you to introduce those values. It allow the user only to introduce the values in metric or imperial (pounds). And in the majority of the apps evaluated there is no way to customize the metrics.

GUERRILLA APPROACH
UK users understand their metrics:
Weight in stones & pounds
Height in feet
Running distance units in kilometers
Mayor takeaways
What the user want to do?
Understand their measurement system
Change their measurement system
Unit systems:
Metric: Kg / Km/ Cm
US: Pound / Miles / Feet
UK (imperial): Stones & pounds / Km & miles* / Feet
*The UK user when refers to running distance use the Metric system
IDENTIFIED USER NEEDS & HYPOTHESIS
We reviewed our app and identified a few user needs and hypothesis to evaluate.
USER NEEDS
Onboarding process and account preferences
AS A… UK user I NEED TO...Add the weight in stone SO THAT...I don’t get frustrated when I have to convert the data into the metrics I understand

All across the app
AS A…UK user I NEED TO...See weight in stone (Change my data preference) SO THAT… I understand the data displayed across the app
HYPOTHESIS
Onboarding screen
If the user understand the three metrics
then can set up their weight and height easily
If the user can customize their metrics
then can set up their weight and height easily
If the user get informed of the metric by their region
then can set up their weight and height easily
USER FLOWS AND TESTING
To test the hypothesis a few people were interviewed and remote testing was also used to identify better experience.
TESTING
Onboarding process
We identify that the user were confused by the labels and was struggling to add their value in the measurement system they understand.
The hypothesis using the region was not clear for the user as different users in different regions might use different units.
It was easy, clear and less frustrating for the user to be able to select the units they understand.

Account settings
We identify that the user would like to customize their measurement system individually (distance, height and weight).
CHALLENGES
Three different user UK, USA, Singapore use different measurement systems.
Users in the UK use primarily the imperial metric but when they refer to distance while doing sport use the metric system.
HIGH FIDELITY DESIGN
Based on the user flows testing with the user, more iterations were made and a high fidelity prototype was created using Sketch and then built for the iOS and Android app.
ONBOARDING FLOW
Allow the user to select the measurement unit when the start to use the app, to allow a seamless experience and reduce frustration when looking at the numbers in the app.

ACCOUNT SETTINGS FLOW
Allow the user to change their measurement unit at any point while using the app.
